Major revamp planned at Dar es Salaam

November 1, 2011

Dar es Salaam, is eyeing a major reconstruction and dredging project that would allow Tanzania’s main port to remain competitive as vessels get larger.

Tanzania Ports Authority Director General Ephraim Mgawe this week approved a US$1.1 million grant that will be used to fund a feasibility study into the project.

Mgawe said the intention was “to modernise and increase the port’s efficiency and make it more competitive in the global maritime business”.

He added: “The main purpose of the study is to come up with technical details and designs to be used for the construction of modern berths and cargo handling facilities to place Dar es Salaam port on a competitive footing in the regional maritime business.”

The study will see consultants investigate the most efficient options for the project.

Six companies have tendered for the project and the winner will be given two months to finalise a report, with construction expected to commence next July.
