Huge new investment planned for Grimsby

November 30, 2011

Associated British Ports’ UK east coast port of Grimsby is in line for a £25 million (US$38.8m) investment in a Humber river terminal to handle car-carriers, due to open in 2013.

Construction work is due to start at Grimsby River Terminal early next year.

The investment is linked to a new long-term agreement between ABP and Volkswagen Group UK, a veteran Grimsby customer.

Grimsby cannot handle the largest car-carriers, because its lock entrance restricts access to ships large enough to carry about 800 vehicles.

The new terminal will make it possible for the port to handle ships that can carry up to 3,000 vehicles.

ABP Grimsby & Immingham Port Director John Fitzgerald said: “This new contract strengthens our close working relationship with VW Group.

“The development of the terminal will allow us to significantly expand and will bring new job opportunities in coming years.”

Robin Slough, VW Group’s Head of Vehicle Operations, said: “Grimsby is at the centre of our UK logistics strategy. We are delighted to support ABP’s expansion project by committing our traffic for the long term.”
