Dubai's new airport off to a good start

Dubai’s World Central Airport handled almost 90,000 tonnes of air freight during its first full year of operations, Dubai Airports said today.
The company owns and manages operations and development at two airports: Dubai International and Dubail World Central (DWC).
During its first full calendar year of operations, DWC’s average monthly air cargo volumes totalled 7,477 tonnes, including transit traffic of 32,989 tonnes – 37%.
The airport handles mostly private jets but 44% (3,609) of the aircraft movements during the year were commercial cargo flights, by 36 carriers, predominantly cargo charter operations, Dubai Airports said.
CEO Paul Griffiths said: “Although the airport is in its infancy, incremental cargo traffic growth has been steady and continues to ramp up as new operations are launched.”
He said that sea to air freight traffic growth was particularly “robust”, as carriers took advantage of the airport’s bonded link to Jebel Ali port.
“Additionally, the road feeder service operating between Dubai International and Dubai World Central facilitated the smooth flow of transit air freight,” he added.
Together, Dubai’s two airports handled 2.28 million tonnes of air freight in 2011, slightly up on 2010, said the operator.
