Dover gets the go aherad for second terminal

November 30, 2011

In what is being seen as a vote of confidence in the UK’s busiest trust port, the government yesterday formally gave the go-ahead for Dover’s second ferry terminal.

The £400 million (US$620m) Terminal 2 will effectively double the capacity of Dover’s ferry port.

The port said the decision was a clear sign that the government expected traffic through this key gateway to increase substantially beyond the recession.

The green light also allows the related waterfront enabling works that are the necessary pre-cursor to the regeneration of this part of the town – a development described locally as a catalyst for Dover’s renaissance – to be delivered in advance of Terminal 2.

Bob Goldfield, CEO of Port of Dover, said yesterday: “This is a great day for the port and its long-term future, for our local community and for the long-term resilience of the UK economy.”

Director of Port Development Mike Krayenbrink added: “Terminal 2 will be the single biggest development ever undertaken by Dover Harbour Board, and it will become the second biggest ferry terminal in the UK, after Dover’s existing ferry terminal in the Eastern Docks.

Goldfield added: “This decision should give confidence that good things are starting to happen for Dover.”
