Crew safe after collision sinks vessel in Bay of Biscay
December 12, 2011
The crew of a cargo ship has been rescued after a collision with another vessel in the Bay of Biscay, about 400km south-west of Land’s End.
The Florece and chemical tanker Afrodite collided at about 3.30am. The tanker was undamaged, but the Dominican Republic-registered Florece later sank.
Its seven-member crew abandoned ship in life rafts and were rescued by a nearby containership, the Ocean Titan.
Falmouth Coastguard helped co-ordinate the rescue and said the crew of the Florece, a mix of Russians, Polish and Ukrainians were safe and uninjured.
Spanish coastguards also sent a helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft to the scene.
